A practicing attorney in Charlotte since 1969, Pender McElroy holds a B.S. in Business Administration from UNC-Chapel Hill and a J.D. from the UNC School of Law, where he was a member of the North Carolina Law Review. After law school, he served as clerk for one year to Justice William H. Bobbitt of the North Carolina Supreme Court.

He is a member of the American Bar Association and North Carolina Bar Association and the following sections of those associations: Business Law, Dispute Resolution, Real Property, Estate Planning, Tax and Law Office Management.

He serves as a commercial arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association. He is managing partner of the firm.

Mr. McElroy serves as board chair-elect of Mental Health America. He is a former president of the Mecklenburg County Bar, former chairman of the N.C. Conference of Bar Presidents and former board member of the Mecklenburg Bar Foundation. He is a Rotarian and a Paul Harris Fellow. He previously served on the boards and as board chair of Presbyterian Samaritan Counseling Center, Crisis Assistance Ministry, Legal Aid of North Carolina, Mental Health Association in North Carolina, Mental Health Association of Central Carolinas, Presbyterian Home at Charlotte (Sharon Towers), Charlotte-Mecklenburg Senior Centers and Community Health Services. For 13 years he was a member of the N.C. Commission for Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and, Substance Abuse Services and served as chairman for 7 years.

He was listed in the NC Super Lawyers 2006-2010 (Business Law) and was a recipient of the 2002 William L. Thorp Pro Bono Award by the NC Bar Association
